Avagddu

I painted this awesome piece several years ago at my friend Norman Meyer's home, way out in Los Angeles, CA. The character is named, Avagddu, and it's from a comic book called Slaine the King, illustrated by Glenn Fabry, and written by Pat Mills and Mike McMahon. Here's a short description of Avagddu found on the internet: "

"Avagddu is the son of the earth goddess and a tainted, brute of a demon. Avagddu is misshaped and covered with boils; he also has only one good eye. He is the dark side of the Earth Power personified."

Above is an illustration of Avagddu by Glenn Fabry from the pages of Slaine the King. As you can see, Norman did an exemplary job capturing all the nuances of Glenn's depiction of Avagddu. I actually applied some of Norman's facial hair to some of the boils to push the loathsome factor. Melon Head

I picked up this grim little gem from Quarantine Studios table at Wonderfest 2013. Sculpted by the undisputed sculptural Master of the Macabre, William Paquet. Melonhead was a pre-painted statue with very pale skin tone. I stripped off the factory paint finish with a soaking in Easy-Off oven cleaner, and scrubbed like a fiend until it was all removed.

Since the original paint was light, I knew that I wanted to apply a more drab finish, and ultimately went for a dark, sepulchral green appearance.

Bloater

Here we have another piece sculpted by John Schuster which is based on a character from a video game. This is a Bloater, and it's one of the ugly creatures from the Playstation 3 game, The Last of Us. I'm not familiar with the storyline, or why these things are completely festooned with fungi and all manner of neat looking mushrooms, but it's an interesting twist on the zombie mythos. John's Bloater bust is pretty small, measuring at 4.25" tall, but it's imbued with lots of very nicely executed details, and I really enjoyed painting it.

Master of Fist

This is a nice piece sculpted by John Schuster.  Akuma character is from the Capcom game, Street Fighter. An excellent study of a strained and exaggerated musculature. I used a 4x4" block of wood for the base, and I decided to incorporate the kanji symbol which appears on Akuma's back at certain times.

Hopper Bust

Greetings, my Friends. I'm very happy to share with you my first painted piece of the year 2015. It's  a piece that I've been eager to paint for nearly three years. Sculptor Dominic Qwek originally released a smaller version of this Hopper bust back in early 2012, and I waited around long enough for him to release a larger version of the same piece to do so.

This larger version measures 7.5" at the top of the head, not counting the antennae which put the total height at 9.5". This larger version is about twice the size of the smaller piece that Dominic released in 2012. It will be available very soon, and if you're fortunate enough to attend the upcoming Monsterpalooza show in Burbank, CA., you'll have the opportunity to snag one of these and see the other amazing creatures that Dominic Qwek will have available at there. Thanks for having a look, and Happy New Year!

Man Grasshopper with Spider - Unpainted

It's been a while since I've posted any pictures of unpainted, un-assembled resin kits, so I'll start things back up with an interesting gem from Japan called Man Grasshopper with Spider. This 1/6 scale resin kit is sculpted by Keisuke Yoneyama, and produced by Hellpainter.

First let me start off by saying that if you're interested in bizarre, science fiction and horror based original designs, and have not heard of Hellpainter from Japan, then visit their website, like... yesterday: http://hellpainter.com/

Sculptor Keisuke Yoneyama is a fantastic artist as you will clearly see from the pictures posted below. The delicate manner in which he fleshed out this character with it's organic, bone-like forms and chitinous armor flowing throughout is quite impressive, and his style very much reminds me of the work of Master sculptor, Takayuki Takeya. In fact, this piece very much reminds me of a piece released from Fewture Models in 1994 called,  Pusher Hopper: http://thesepulcher.blogspot.com/2009/12/fewture-metamorphosis-addict-1-hopper.html

I could ramble on and on about how much I enjoy this piece, but I'll simply let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy.
